Protests against anti-Islam film continue in Kashmir Valley

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Protests against a derogatory film about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) continued in the Valley, with lawyers and students joining in to vent anger at the US and Israel.

Over a dozen people, including several policemen, were injured as violence broke out in the Kupwara and the Baramulla districts during which law-enforces rounded up at least six demonstrators.

In Srinagar, students took out a protest march in the central city denouncing the insulting film said to have originated in the United States.

Students took to the streets in anger in the old city as well.

Chanting slogans against Israel and the US, several students said the bullying powers did not want to live in peace with the Islamic world. “This is the reason they resort to such obscene acts and plots,” they said.

Restive at nine local youth having been picked up by the police the previous night, the northern township of Baramulla flared up with fresh protests Sunday morning.

Students of the local degree college emerged in a procession marching through various town markets in a bid to reach the main square.

Meanwhile, the students turned violent and pelted stones on the forces when the latter refused to give way.

A number of students were taken into custody in the clashes while half-a-dozen were injured.

Protests also broke out in the Kashmir University’s north campus in the town.

Anti-US protests were reported from the frontier district of Kupwara also where marchers emerged from the Jamia Qadeem, By-Pass, and Iqbal Market areas, clashing with police and the paramilitary forces.

Law enforces resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse violent demonstrators.

In the afternoon, lawyers took out a procession from the sessions court complex and held a sit-in before the deputy commissioner’s office after marching through various localities.

Shops and businesses remained closed in the Pattu Shahi area of Lolab in the Kupwara district where locals are protesting against a film screened by the army.
